Sonnet After Elizabeth Barrett Browning

By

How do I hate you? Please, let me explain.
I hate you to the dark side of the moon.
Although even from there your presence looms
and covers in shadow all stars and space.

I hate you more than the end of all days
and so, Earth’s destruction can’t come too soon.
I’ll watch fire and flame and war from my room
if that’s what it takes to keep you away.

I hate you with all that’s left in my heart.
Though its chambers are drowning in your love,
your love can only tear me apart.
So, I hate you and your peaceful dove.

For what kind of god were you from the start?
You filled me with hatred when you stole my love.
